Crispy Malawi and Lord Gaga Dominate Music Scene In Lilongwe Ghettos
Lilongwe’s urban youth are gravitating towards hip-hop artist Crispy Malawi and dancehall sensation Lord Gaga, who have emerged as the most popular musicians in densely populated neighborhoods such as Areas 23, 24, 25, and Kaliyeka.
According to findings by the Malawi24 entertainment desk, many young people, particularly those in their early to mid-twenties, find solace in the duo’s music, which significantly influences their way of life both positively and negatively.
Crispy Malawi solidified his reputation last year after winning the Best Hip Hop Act award at the MASO Awards, while Lord Gaga, despite not securing any accolades, continues to rise in prominence, particularly with his hit song "Ungatani."
Local entertainment stakeholders recognize the impact of these artists. Nditah Chikoza, a DJ and owner of Kaphika drinking joint in Area 23, attributes Lord Gaga’s growing fan base to his relatable background and natural musical talent.
Among the youth, Crispy Malawi’s music resonates deeply. A resident of Area 25 shared his admiration, saying, "Crispy Malawi is my favorite artist because his lyrics speak to me. My top song is 'Mutu,' which expresses deep thoughts and emotions."
While mainstream artists like Namadingo and the duo of Lulu and Driemo continue to amass millions of views on YouTube with hits such as "Tuli" and "Khalidwe," the music preferences in local entertainment hubs reveal a different trend, with grassroots favorites like Crispy Malawi and Lord Gaga dominating the scene.
